Hello all! I wanted to write and let you all know that I am here safe and sound! A recap of my trip thus far:
Arrived on Saturday at about lunch time, met up with my roommate (McKenzie) and the airport, and proceeded to try and find a taxi to our new home, which is great. It's this 4 story building (I promise I'll post pictures soon) with rooms scattered through out. Its sort of split level, and there are open air balconies all over the place. Everything is covered in tile, the floor, the kitchen, the patios, my bathroom, all over the place. So pretty!
We live in this little neighborhood (burro) outside of San Jose, called San Pedro. The university is a good 35 minute walk and 5 flights of stairs from our casa, so needless to say we're all exhausted by the end of the day.
My classes should be pretty interesting, especially the international environmental law class, where we are specifically focusing on the environmental policy of the region. It's amazing to see the difference here because the country is not considered to be fully developed. The power flickers almost anytime it rains, and there isn't any sort of proper drainage or water treatment system in the city. However, the city is so interesting, especially the architecture. Because of the weather and the fact that there isn't any air conditioner, everything is pretty much open air. The windows are always open, so when it rains, you sort of always get a tiny bit wet. But it's refreshing! And the university is so colorful - everything is painted and all different colors, and just when you forget that you are in a classroom in Costa Rica, you hear all the birds chirping like nothing I've ever heard before and it brings you back.
Yesterday, one of my housemates and I found the university track, and it's nice to feel like I'm falling into a routine here - if you know me you know I like nothing better than a routine! Friday, we are headed to raft on the Pacuare River, and then we may go on another little daytrip Sunday when I get back.
Hasta luego!
